(OWEN CO.) - An Owen County Highway Department employee was killed Friday morning when he was struck by a vehicle while removing a tree that had fallen across Jones Road near Gosport.

The accident was reported at 6:45 a.m.

Owen County Coroner Lorna Dhom says 60-year-old Ricky Fishel of Gosport, who was the highway department's assistant superintendent, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Dhom says Fishel had no obvious injuries. An autopsy was conducted on Saturday morning in Terre Haute.

A second highway worker, 51-year-old Jeffery Hodges of Paragon, was also struck at the scene. Hodges was treated at IU Health Bloomington Hospital for minor injuries and released.

According to Owen County Sheriff's Department police, 24-year-old Chance Brewer was driving the 2007 Jeep Commander through the intersection when his vehicle struck the two men who were out of their highway department truck and using chain saws to cut and remove a fallen tree.

The investigation is ongoing.
