Last updated on Wednesday, May 24, 2017

(BEDFORD) - North Lawrence Community Schools was awarded a silver status by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service new initiative, called Turnip the Beet award.

NLCS was awarded a Silver status and was one of two sponsors in Indiana that earned it this first year.

This award program recognizes Summer Food Service Program sponsors who have worked extra hard to serve nutritious and appealing meals during the summer months.

Nominations were evaluated based on a wide range of nutrition and meal quality criteria.

There were a total of 49 award-winning sponsors nationwide.

Summer meals will be served at Lincoln Elementary, Bedford Middle School and Dollens Elementary/Oolitic Middle School this summer.

North Lawrence Community Schools Food Service Director Stacie Green says the meal program will be offered from June 5th until July 21, Monday through Friday, at each location and provides free breakfast and lunches to anyone 18 and younger.

Breakfast will be served from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. and lunch from 11:30 until 1 p.m.

Adults may eat breakfast for $2.10 and lunch for $3.30. This is dine in only.
The goal of the program is to serve nutritious meals to children when National School Lunch and School Breakfast Program meals were not available to ensure all children receive proper nutrition throughout the year.

Summer Food Service Program will reimburse the school for preparing and serving the meals during the summer.
