Grissom Monument at City Hall

(MITCHELL) - The City of Mitchell is replacing sidewalks thanks to a partnership with Hoosier Uplands and the Lawrence County Economic Growth Council to attract visitors to the city.

The Times Mail reports that through the partnership new sidewalks will enhance Sixth Street as a gateway into Mitchell. Officials are calling it the Sixth Street Gateway Project.

David Miller, Chief Executive Officer of Hoosier Uplands says that Sixth Street serves as a common gateway for visitors coming into Mitchell from Spring Mill State Park. Its proximity allows easy access to downtown, the Grissom Monument at City Hall and the Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom Boyhood Home and the Opera House.

To help fund the project, a $7,500 grant was secured from the growth council.

The project will include the replacement of sidewalks on both the east and west sides of Sixth Street, from College to Mississippi avenues. The sidewalks will be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, allowing better access to those with disabilities.

If funding allows, the project will move to Seventh and Eighth streets next.
