(BEDFORD) - A total of 54 people gathered at the Bedford Community Garden last Saturday during the annual United Way Day of Caring.

Together they planted 100 shrubs, 30 fruit trees and some ornamental trees for landscaping. They also painted the shed and distributed mulch from a "gigantic pile" according to Lorri Hamer, Executive Director of the United Way of South Central Indiana.

Hamer said, "This was just a perfect project for us at a perfect time. You know we don't always have one thing that we can bring all the volunteers together."

Super Oldies 105.5 WQRK supported the event with entertainment.

"With the rain we got, we had a lot of mud, but it was fun! We had the radio station there added some energy to the day. After all the work was done we had a barbecue...we had hamburgers, hot dogs and food for the folks and kind of celebrated and looked at all they'd done."

United Way chose the community garden for their Day of Caring to continue their support of an active lifestyle in this community said Hamer.

The community garden is free. There is a community tool shed that everyone can use. Keys to the tool shed are $15.
