(UNDATED) - Marsh Supermarkets says all of its remaining stores could close within two months, including two in Bloomington, if a buyer or business partner is not located.
Marsh Supermarkets' list of closures continues to grow, with a round of 17 more potential store closures announced, including one in Bloomington.
Marsh cited unexpected difficulties, increased competition and poor performance as reasons for the possible closure of 17 Indiana stores in two reports to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.
In accordance with the federal Worker Adjustment Retraining and Notification (WARN) act, Marsh reported 1,535 jobs could be lost in the next two months if a buyer or partner is not found.
The store at 1825 N. Kinser Pike in Bloomington was listed as one of the 17 stores in this round of anticipated closures. In January 2016, the supermarket chain announced it would close its westside store at 3600 W. Third St. due to "lease expiration and the under-performance of the location." At that time, the northside location was slated to undergo extensive remodeling.
According to the WARN notice, the Kinser Pike store may have to terminate 83 employees, 55 of whom are full-time.
The remaining Bloomington Marsh, located at 123 S. Kingston Drive, underwent a $500,000 remodel in 2014. It is not listed among the stores to potentially close in the next 60 days.
Indiana Public Media quoted an unnamed Marsh Supermarkets spokesperson saying the company plans to close its remaining stores should a buyer not be found, but The Herald-Times could not confirm that statement Tuesday.
Late last month, the prescription records and inventory of Marsh Supermarkets were sold to CVS. Pharmacy employees were given the opportunity to apply for jobs at CVS stores, according to Tom Mulligan, a Marsh spokesman. Mulligan added CVS plans to expand its workforce numbers as a result of the increase in customer base.
In addition to the Bloomington location, stores in Brownsburg, Carmel, Greenwood, Indianapolis, Kokomo, Marion, Muncie and Zionsville all were identified in the latest round of potential closures.
