(SEYMOUR) - Officials expect work to resume later this year on a stalled $1 million restoration project for a 19th century wooden covered bridge in Jackson County.
Officials say the contractor removed its equipment from the Shieldstown Covered Bridge early last year after nearly 70 percent of the wood obtained for the sides of the bridge was rejected because it didn't meet national historic preservation standards.
County Highway Superintendent Jerry Ault told The Seymour Tribune (http://bit.ly/2rFfQTC ) work is expected to start again in September since the contractor is obtaining the needed wood. Ault says state Department of Transportation officials had more leverage with the contractor to get work resumed.
Shieldstown Covered Bridge is the fourth and last covered bridge constructed in Jackson County, was built in 1876 and is 355 feet long and spans over the East Fork of White River. The bridge carried traffic until 1980. It is located approximately 1 mile north of US 50 West on County Road 200 North.
