(BLOOMINGTON) - Indiana University has added the first all-electric cars to their fleet of operations allowing the university to save on gas and decrease emissions released into the environment and maintenance costs.
The university purchased four, 2017 Nissan Leafs. Two will be used for parking enforcement; one was given to IU Campus Bus and the fourth will be added to the university's fleet services for employees to rent for university business.
The Nissan Leafs are 100 percent electric, have virtually silent motors and release zero tailpipe emissions. they have a 30 kWh lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery with up to 107-mile range, 80 kW AC synchronous electric motor and Nissan Intelligent Key with push button start.
Kevin Whited, transportation demand management coordinator says the cars are perfect for IU staff to drive around the campus and City of Bloomington. However the vehicle will not be used for long-distance travel because the charge dwindles driving on highways.
If the all-electric cars work well, Whited says more will be added to Fleet Services.
