(BLOOMINGTON) - As the Hoosier to Hoosier Sale (H2H) enters its eighth year, the waste diversion program is celebrating a five-year partnership with Duke Energy.
Since 2013, Duke Energy Indiana has recruited volunteers locally and from across the state to assist with the Hoosier to Hoosier spring collection from residence halls at Indiana University, including recognizing the effort as a "President's Signature Event" in 2015.
"Every spring, H2H picks up donations from 13 residence halls and over 10,000 students in the span of just one week," says Mayor John Hamilton. "It's a challenge to get all the volunteers we need to complete such a huge effort, and Duke comes through for us year after year."
H2H, a long-time partnership between the city and IU, aims to collect reusable items from students when they move in order to divert those items from the landfill and raise funds for local charities. The items are sorted and stored over the summer, then sold to both students and community members just before the beginning of the academic year. This year's sale will be August 19.
"Duke Energy is once again pleased to partner with the City of Bloomington and Indiana University to support the H2H Sale," says Bruce Calloway, government and community relations manager for Duke Energy. "This year we have 25 employees registered representing Bloomington, Plainfield and Columbus districts. Over the past 4 years, over 130 employees volunteers have logged over 1,025 hours to support H2H alone."
H2H funds support City of Bloomington and IU sustainability programs as well as the Cutters Soccer Club. Volunteers are needed all summer, and pick up is available for donations from off-campus IU students. For more information about donating, volunteering, or attending the sale, visit h2h.indiana.edu.
"Volunteering for H2H has been an incredibly rewarding experience. From the first year I volunteered, I was hooked and look forward to it each year," says Jodi Trippany, work management support supervisor for Duke Energy. "I feel proud knowing the items I help move will end up being sold at the H2H sale and that money stays right here in Bloomington. I feel like I am part of a larger effort and that I am helping to make a difference in my community. I am proud to work for a company that supports volunteer efforts within our community."
