Last updated on Friday, May 26, 2017

(HELTONVILLE) - Two men were arrested after a vehicle crashed into several headstones in GilGal Cemetery Thursday.

According to a Lawrence County Police log, officers were called to the cemetery at 4 p.m. after a report of a driver in a red Corvette speeding in the cemetery and crashing into gravestones. The caller reported the vehicle was stuck in the mud and that two males tan from the scene.

Police say, 21-year-old Thomas Nordoff, of Heltonville, was traveling north on a private road in the cemetery when the 1993 Chevrolet Corvette he was driving spun out of control, left the roadway and stuck multiple headstones.

Nordoff and his passenger 19-year-old Troy Simpson fled the scene.

Simpson, of 1614 N St., later returned to the scene and was arrested on a charge of public intoxication.

Officers located Nordoff at a home near the cemetery and he was arrested on charges of operating a vehicle while never licensed, cemetery mischief and leaving the scene of an accident.

Police say multiple headstones were destroyed and there was damage to all sides of the vehicle and the under carriage.
