Bloomington's Southeast YMCA Pools Closed Tuesday After Bacteria Found in Water

Last updated on Wednesday, May 24, 2017

(BLOOMINGTON) - The pools at the Southeast YMCA closed Tuesday afternoon after patrons reported an itchy skin rash after swimming in the facility.

According to YMCA Monroe County Chief Executive Officer Jason Winkle, a bacteria named Pseudomonas aeruginosa has been identified in the pool water.

Regular weekly testing did not show anything out of the ordinary, but a third-party lab confirmed the presence of the bacteria. Officials closed the pools immediately until further notice.

The YMCA has hired an outside lab in Pennsylvania to perform testing in addition to the facility's required testing. The investigation into the bacteria, as well as the process of removing the bacteria from the pools, is ongoing.

Officials say between 12-24 members at the Southeast YMCA have reported experiencing some level of reaction.

Pools at the Northwest YMCA do not contain the bacteria.
