Bike Month Events In Bloomington

(BLOOMINGTON) - May is National Bikes Month and in recognition, the City of Bloomington’s Planning and Transportation Department will be working with Monroe County Government, IU’s Bicycle Program, and the Monroe County Library to host public events celebrating biking in Bloomington.

The public is invited to the following free events in the month of May:

Women's Ride - Thursday, May 4th

Join us for a women's only bicycle ride around Bloomington to the eastside and back. This loop ride explores the range of bicycle facility types available to access the east side of Bloomington from the downtown. We will travel as a group.The total distance will be between 7 and 8 miles. At the end of the ride, riders can choose to participate in a social outing along the B-Line or end at City Hall. All who identify as a woman are welcome to attend. Meet in the parking lot of City Hall, next to the B-Line and 8th Street at 5:30 p.m. Bring your own bicycle in good working condition and a fun attitude.

Family Biking 101 - Saturday, May 6th

How do you bike with kids? What bicycles are best for carrying several children? What works best for carrying groceries on a bike? Learn the answer to those and other questions at Family Biking 101 on May 6th at the Bloomington Community Farmers' Market! There are plenty of families in Bloomington who are biking with the kids in tow. There will be family bicyclists ready to share their experience and knowledge on the subject and showing off their bucket and cargo bicycles. Family Biking 101 will be located on the B-Line next to 8th Street and the prepared foods area. Please stop by, say hello, ask questions, and get excited about bicycling with the family!

Historic District Bike Ride - Wednesday, May 10th

Join us in celebrating Historic Preservation Month AND Bike Month in May. This loop ride will visit 7 local historic districts. It will be a nice paced, 6-7 mile bike ride with breaks to learn some quick historic district facts. This ride is hosted in partnership with the weekly B-Town Free Parking Squad ride. This event will be hosted by City of Bloomington, IN- Housing and Neighborhood Development - HAND and City of Bloomington Planning and Transportation Department.

Bike to Work Day & Block Party - Friday, May 19th

First, choose to bicycle to work on this day. If you do bike to work, be sure to register so you're eligible for prizes from the Parks and Recreation Department. Also, feel free to swing by one of three encouragement stations hosted from 7:30-10am around town: on the B-Line near Dodds, on the Courthouse Square, or near the Sample Gates. Finally, attend the Bike to Work Day Party. From 4 p.m. till 7 p.m., join us for a National Bike to Work Day Block Party Event on Grant Street, between Kirkwood Ave. and 6th Street. Stop by to enjoy some food in the street, learn a few skateboarding tricks, check out new accessories from local bike shops, or share your opinion on how to make bicycling better in Bloomington. Whether you biked to work or not, the party is for everyone who wants to support walking and bicycling in Bloomington.
