(BEDFORD) - The Bedford Urban Enterprise Association's board of directors last week voted to dedicate $100,000 toward the construction of the StoneGate Arts and Education Center located at the corner of 15th and J streets (the former JC Penney building).

The new facility will provide a downtown location for job training, degree work and professional training in collaborative partnerships with Oakland City University, Ivy Tech, Radius Indiana, West Gate Academy and North Lawrence Career Center.

The board also voted to donate $75,000 to the Bedford Community Garden located at 516 H Street. The organization donated the nearly three acres to the city for the community garden.

Plots are free, and gardeners can pay $15 for access to a shed full of tools. The property, encompassing nearly three acres, can accommodate 62 garden plots.

The board also donated:

  • The Downtown Depot (Milwaukee Depot) was awarded $18,649 to rehabilitate the eaves.

  • Bedford North Lawrence Scholarship Foundation received a $25,000 donation.

  • The local Knights of Columbus was awarded $1,000.
