(BLOOMINGTON) - A Memorial Day vehicle pursuit landed a Gosport man in jail.

Monday afternoon just after 2 p.m., Indiana State Police Sergeant Greg Day was conducting traffic patrol along Garrison Chapel Road near Eller Road, southwest of Bloomington, when he observed a red Jeep Cherokee traveling at an excessive speed of 70 miles per hour.

As he pulled out to initiate a traffic stop with his emergency lights activated, the Jeep accelerated and attempted to flee. Sgt. Day pursued the Jeep north on Garrison Chapel Road as the Jeep passed two vehicles in a no passing zone before attempting to make a left hand turn onto State Road 48.

The Jeep slid off the road and became stuck in a ditch.

The male driver fled the Jeep on foot and ran north through a yard, crossing a fence into a field. Sgt. Day pursued the male, apprehending him a short distance from the vehicles.

The driver was identified as 34-year-old Chad A. Pemberton of Gosport. Pemberton was wanted on two outstanding felony warrants, one from Monroe County for failure to appear for an auto theft charge and one from Morgan County for failure to appear on a meth charge.

Pemberton is now facing charges of resisting law enforcement by fleeing in vehicle, Level 6 felony; resisting law enforcement by fleeing on foot, a Class C misdemeanor; reckless driving, a Class C misdemeanor and was cited for speeding, passing in a no passing zone and driving while his driver's license was suspended.

Pemberton was incarcerated at the Monroe County Jail where he is being held without bond.
