Earlier:

One man was fatally shot along the side of the road at the Salem Bypass during a dual shooting just west of State Road 60.

The Washington County Sheriff's Department received a 911 call at 9:26 p.m. on Wednesday reporting that two men were injured on the side of the road.

When deputies and Salem Police officers arrived there was no vehicle at the scene of the shooting.

According to Salem Police Officer Russell Wilcoxson, one of the victims had been shot nine times in the torso and the leg. The other man had been shot in the back of the head. It is not known if both men were shot with the same gun or with different caliber handguns.

According to police, one man told officials that they had traveled to the area from Louisville with two other men and were then kicked out along the side of the road. The other men in the vehicle then started shooting at them and took off. The man would not tell police the names of the other two men they were with and they did not provide a description of the vehicle.

Washington County E.M.S. arrived and one man was taken to St. Vincent Hospital in Salem where he was pronounced dead. The other man was taken to the University of Louisville Hospital in Louisville, KY by air ambulance with life threatening injuries.

Indiana State Police Crime Scene Investigators, along with Indiana State Police Detectives, processed the crime scene. The western portion of the bypass between State Road 60 and State Road 135 was closed to traffic for around two hours.

There are no suspects, but officers do not think the general public's safety is at risk.

No further information will be released until an autopsy is performed on the deceased male at the Kentucky Medical Examiner's Office in Louisville, KY.

The name of the victim transported by air ambulance to the University of Louisville Hospital is not being released due to lack of a positive identification.

Detectives are asking if anyone was on the Salem Bypass between State Road 60 and State Road 135 from 9:15 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday and saw any vehicles or people stopped along the roadway to contact the Indiana State Police Post at 1-800-872-6743 or 812-246-5424. Callers can remain anonymous.
