Last updated on Wednesday, April 26, 2017

(MITCHELL) - A Mitchell teenager was arrested after he allegedly punched and kicked a 12-year-old boy.

Mitchell police arrested 18-year-old Cody Vanscoy on charges of battery on a person 14 years or younger, resisting arrest by force and disorderly conduct.

According to police, Vanscoy was walking in the 100 block of East Frank Street at 8:10 p.m. Friday with a couple of girls when they came into contact with a 12-year-old and his older brother.

The older brother allegedly made an offensive remark about Vanscoy's girlfriend.

Vanscoy then confronted the older brother and that is when the 12-year-old stepped in and began defending his older brother.

It was reported that shouting match began, then ended when Vanscoy punched the 12-year-old, knocking him to the ground. He then kicked the boy, pulled a knife and threatened the boy.

A resident in the area saw the altercation and called police.

The 12-year-old suffered red marks on the sides and back of his neck. He was taken by an AMR ambulance to the hospital for treatment.

Vanscoy was arrested early Saturday morning and taken to the Lawrence County Jail where he is currently being held on a $7,500 surety or $755 cash bond.
