(BLOOMINGTON) - If this year’s Little 500 bike race is anything like years’ past, crime rates will rise says Indiana Police Lt. Craig Munroe.
The event is this weekend. On Friday, coverage of the Women's 30th Running of the Little 500 begins at 4 p.m. EST. Then on Saturday, coverage of the Men's 67th Running of the Little 500 begins at 2 p.m. EST.
The Little 500 is the largest collegiate bike race in the United States. Modeled after the Indianapolis 500, riders compete in four-person teams around a quarter-mile cinder track at Bill Armstrong Stadium. The men's race is 200 laps -- 50 miles, and the women's race is 100.
More than 25,000 fans are expected to flock to the campus in Bloomington to be a part of IU's storied tradition and police expect to be busy with calls.
Last year the IU Police Department received 202 calls during the weekend. Police ticketed 173 people, with three being arrested for peeping at Wright Quad. Police arrested 39 people for underage drinking and there were four rapes reported.
To combat the rise in crime both IU Police and Bloomington Police, and Monroe County will ramp up their presence in the area.
