Lawrence County Sheriff's Department Looking For Reserve Officers

Last updated on Friday, April 7, 2017

(BEDFORD) - The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department is currently seeking energetic, dedicated individuals to be a member of the law enforcement agency in a Reserve Officer capacity.

They currently have 5 positions available due to both internal and outside transfers to full time law enforcement positions.

Sheriff Mike Branham says that many individuals in today's society have an interest in working in the field of law enforcement; however, very few of those individuals know or learn of an opportunity to serve their community as a sworn police officer on a volunteer basis while still maintaining their regular, full time job.

At the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office, reserve officers are sworn officers with full police powers and are charged with various assignments that include special events, details, and road patrol. Reserve officer responsibilities include directing traffic, providing security at local school events, providing law enforcement services at local community events, court security, civil process and street patrol. During street patrol, reserve officers will handle the same calls that merited officers handle. These include responding to calls for police services, making arrests, completing case reports, conducting investigations, issuing traffic citations, completing vehicle crash reports and many, many others.

Officers in the reserve program wear the exact same uniform as regular, full-time, paid officers and they are virtually indistinguishable from one-another. Individuals willing to make the commitment to serve the community in this role must be willing to volunteer his/her time with NO financial compensation. In addition, individuals must be willing and able to purchase their own uniforms (shirts, trousers, and boots).

Reserve Officers are not required to have any prior experience or training.

Sheriff Branham says that officers come from all walks of life with full time jobs in areas such as public utilities, education, healthcare, private industry, hospitality services and many others.
