(BEDFORD) - On Thursday, the Lawrence County Election Board held a public meeting at the Lawrence County Courthouse to discuss forming a study committee to look into developing a voting center.
However Lawrence County Clerk Billie Tumey says the study does not mean the county will pursue the option.
With centralized voting centers, the number of voting sites would be reduced to between eight and 12, according to Tumey. During the last election, there were 25 voting sites, with some sites serving multiple precincts.
With voting centers, votes would still be tallied based on precincts, but voters could visit any voting center in the county.
Each voting center would need to be able to accommodate a large numbers of voters and have internet access and the startup costs of voting centers. It would also save the county money by having fewer poll workers and voting machines.
The board voted to form a voting center committee to study if voting centers would help the county. The committee will then draft a plan for the project. After the draft is completed, it will be opened to public comment for at least 30 days. Then the election board must approve the plan, and fill it with the state.
