IU Sophomore Accused Of Breaking Into Gun Store

Last updated on Thursday, April 20, 2017

(BLOOMINGTON) - An Indiana University sophomore was arrested after he allegedly threw a concrete brick through the window of a gun store on Monday.

Bloomington Police say 19-year-old Lucas Fitts went to the shop to purchase a gun on Monday but was told he was too young. He returned later and tried to break in.

Police arrested Fitts on Tuesday on a felony charge of attempted burglary. He is being held at the Monroe County Jail on a $5,500 bond.

Bloomington Police Capt. Steve Kellams says police were called around 10:45 p.m. to the Four Seasons Gun Shop at 1412 South Monon Drive after the store alarm sounded.

Capt. Kellams says security footage from the store showed a young man with gloves trying to enter the store through the locked front door, then going around the back side of the store. The video shows Fitts then returned to the front of the store and shows him throwing a cement block through the store's front window and running from the scene.

The store owner identified Fitts as the man who had came to the store earlier in the day to purchase a 9-mm handgun manufactured by Llama Firearms. The clerk told Fitts, who was only 19, that state law prohibits handgun sales to people younger than 21.

Kellams says Fitts had also called the store asking about the same gun and police were able to trace the phone number back to Fitts.

Police found Fitts in his dorm room and transported him to the police station where he confessed to the crime.

He told police he broke into the store because he was angry he couldn't buy the gun, even though he had a permit to carry one.

Police secured a search warrant and found the same clothes pictured in the security footage.
