(BEDFORD) - If you're a kid who likes to fish, or know a kid who might, the Hoosier National Forest invites you to the Kids Fishing Derby at the Maumee Boy Scout Camp on Saturday, May 13.

The fishing derby, which runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., is free and all about getting local families to bring their kids outdoors and excited about fishing.

Fishing poles, lunch, bait, and prizes will be provided; however, if kids have their own fishing gear, they are encouraged to bring it.

Bryan King, coordinator of the event says, "We encourage kids to come out and learn about fishing, and hopefully they'll even catch a few fish."

He noted that generally over half the kids catch fish, but every kid has a good time.

Awards are given for the most fish caught and the biggest fish caught for each age group. King said there are several other events at the derby in addition to fishing, including a casting contest, water safety education, bait and fish identification, knot tying, and crafts.

They will also bring back the archery activity to shoot carp targets in the water which has proven to be very popular. There are also fishing-related games for small children.

Other event sponsors include Bass Pro Shops, National Wild Turkey Federation, Indiana Department of Natural Resources, and the Boy Scouts. "With the help of these partners, we are able to host a great event that gets kids excited about fishing," says King.

The event is limited to the first 75 kids to register. Registration is open now at the Forest Service Bedford Office or by calling (812) 275-5987. Participants should be 15 years old or younger and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian (minimum of one adult per three children).

The derby begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at Noon, followed by a free cookout for everyone who attends, including adults. Tarzian Lake at the Maumee Boy Scout Camp is located in Jackson County north of Norman, maps are available from the Bedford office or online.
