Historian Donald Davidson Visits Bedford Rotary Club

Last updated on Friday, April 14, 2017

Donald Davidson was the guest speaker for last week’s Bedford Rotary Club meeting. Davidson is the Chief Historian to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS). He is believed to be the only one to hold the position of Chief Historian at a racetrack.

Davidson came prepared to give away 3 pairs of qualifying tickets to three lucky Rotary club members and members of the community who could answer his trivia questions.

Davidson first came to the IMS on a trip from his home in England. Davidson said, "It started as an interest and it quickly developed into a passion a long time ago. And lead me to come and visit the track from [England]. So I had to save up the money and make the trip."

Davidson commented on his first visit to the track, "When I got here and met all the participants and everybody was so warm and friendly and encouraging. I thought I needed to peruse it. So I came back the next year on a one way ticket..."

Since then, Davidson has become well known for his radio show "The Talk of Gasoline Alley" where he hosts a question and answers session about IMS's past.

"So I've sort of lived the dream. Happily living in the past. And talking about the past. And having people care about that. So, hence we're going out and giving these talks to reminisce with people about the Indianapolis Speedway."

This was one of the many stops Davidson will make on his speaking tour promoting the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500.
