Dogwood Festival Opens Sunday With Opening Prayer Event, Parade Entries Still Being Accepted

(ORLEANS) - The Dogwood Opening Prayer Event (formerly the Dogwood Vespers Service) will be held Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Unity Hall of the Orleans Christian Church.

There will be a special prayer to ask God to bless the festival with safety, good weather and prosperity for Orleans. The event will be led by spiritual leaders of the community.

The Orleans area kids' choir will then present a jazz cantata called, "100% Chance of Rain".

The Orleans Area Ministerial Association will be presenting "Gospel Night" on the main stage in Congress Square. The program will begin at 6 p.m. on April 26th

Area churches will be providing 15 to 20 minutes of gospel music from within their congregation to fill the festival with song. There will also be a special portion of the evening just for kids at 7:30 p.m..

If a church would like to be a part of the program for the evening, contact Tom Bostic at the Orleans Christian Church or Mike Hester at Orleans Wesleyan Church.

Last minute entries are still being accepted for the 49th annual Orleans Dogwood Festival Parade set for Saturday, April 29th beginning at 2 p.m.

The hometown parade will start from the Orleans High School. The school traditionally serves as the staging area for the event.

Line up begins at 11 a.m. and continues up until 1 p.m. Judging of units begins at approximately 1 p.m.

The Parade travels down Maple Street (State Road 37) and through the historic downtown area making its way past the reviewing stand before turning at Orleans Christian Church onto West Jackson Street.

Parking will be prohibited anywhere along the main parade route from early Saturday until after the event that afternoon.
