(BEDFORD) - The City of Beford is working with Administrative Resources Association to help homeowners whose homes are in need of repairs or safety modifications, but can't afford to pay for those repairs.

The repairs will be paid for from a grant.

According to officials, improvements can be electrical upgrades, heating, cooling and plumbing, roofs, windows and doors, and safety modifications such as bathroom upgrades, ramps, widening of doors to accommodate wheelchairs and lighting.

The maximum grant is estimated at $15,000.

To qualify:

  • Applicants must be age 55 or disabled
  • Single-family or owner-occupied
  • Home must be on a permanent foundation (most mobile homes are not eligible)
  • Contract sales not eligible
  • Homes must be insured

Total household income cannot exceed $32,000 for a single occupant, $45,700 for four occupants, or $60,350 for a household of eight occupants.

Applications can be picked up at Bedford City Hall or Lawrence County Senior Citizens, 2205 Washington Ave. Applications are due April 30.
