(BLOOMINGTON) - A Bloomington man was arrested Wednesday night after he struck a pedestrian in the 1300 block of West Second Street and then fled the scene.

A witness to the accident dialed 911 around 9:15 p.m. to report that a white car, a Chrysler Concorde, stuck the man and fled.

According to a Bloomington Police reconstructionist, the man was walking west in the eastbound lane near the edge of the road when the car turned onto Bloomfield Road/West Second Street from Ransom Lane and struck him. Police stated the driver did not apply his brakes or attempt to avoid striking the pedestrian.

The man suffered broken bones in his left leg, knee and clavicle, his right arm and a broken nose and other facial injuries. He is listed in stable condition at IU Bloomington Health Hospital.

Later that night, police received a call from a woman to report damage to her 1999 white Chrysler Concorde. She told police her boyfriend had been driving the vehicle and returned home saying he had struck a large rock in the road.

When police examined the car they found blood, hair and damage consistent with striking the pedestrian.

While officers were inspecting the vehicle, the woman's boyfriend, 32-year-old William Zerface, arrived on the scene and asked what police were doing and then left the scene. At the time police did not realize he had been driving the vehicle.

Police arrested Zerface later that evening on charges of leaving the scene of an accident causing bodily injury. He was taken to the hospital for a blood-alcohol test and then taken to the Monroe County Jail.

Zerface told police he wasn't sure what he hit. He says he heard a loud thud and thought he had hit a branch.
