(BLOOMINGTON) - A Bloomington man was arrested after he fled from Bloomington Police in a stolen Mack truck Sunday night.

According to Lt. John Kovach, officers used bean bag rounds to subdue 23-year-old William Bennet Jr.

Bennet was arrested after police received a report suspicious truck driver at 9:25 p.m. in the 1600 block of West Gray Street. The caller reported the driver didn't know how to operate the truck.

Police then received a report from JB's Salvage that someone had driven a 2001 white Mack roll-off truck, ramming through the gate of their lot.

Police found the Mack truck near the intersection of West Fountain Drive and State Road 37.

Officers followed the truck and tried to make a traffic stop on Nuckles Road, but the driver, later identified as Bennett, continued driving slowly while crashing into bushes. During the incident the truck got stuck momentarily and then continued traveling along West Fountain Drive.

Police placed stop sticks at Fountain Drive and West 11th Street. The truck traveled through the grass, took out a stop sign, headed north on Orris Drive, hit a tree, got onto Monroe Street, hit another tree and got stuck between two buildings.

Bennet then attempted to flee on foot and that is when officers fired two bean bag rounds, striking him in the arm and were able to subdue him.

Police say Bennet appeared to be intoxicated. He was taken to Bloomington Hospital for a medical evaluation and then booked into the Monroe County Jail on preliminary felony charges of auto theft, resisting law enforcement and misdemeanor charges of driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident.
