Bedford Boy Battling Aggressive Cancer

Last updated on Friday, April 14, 2017

(BEDFORD) - 10-year-old Baron Wilson is battling a moderately aggressive cancer, which is extremely rare.

Baron, the grandson of Bedford Police Officer and Master Canine Trainer Mike Johnson, was diagnosed on February 6 with a pediatric form of Thalamic Anaplastic Astrocytoma (TAA).

His parents are Johnathan and Amanda Wilson. Amanda is the daughter of Mike and Bonnie Johnson. Baron has a brother named Grant.

"When we first stopped it, it was the size of a dime," says Johnson. "Because of the location, it cannot be removed in surgery and he risks losing his eyesight, memory and pain sensation, heat sensation and basic motor skills if it gets any bigger. Doctors have no hope of him ever being cancer free."

The goal of his treatments are basically to limit or prevent the cancer from growing so Baron can live a fairly full life with it.

"It is an uphill battle," Johnson says. "But he is a tough boy and if anyone can beat the odds it's definitely him."

To help with medical costs the Bedford Police Department is hosting "Baron's Battle" a 5K Fun Run at the Milwaukee Trial at the U Street entrance.

The event will be June 24th, at 9 a.m.

All proceeds from the run go directly to Baron's family for medical expenses. The department is now accepting orders for T-shirts with the Baron's Battle logo on it

"Upside Prints, on 15th Street, are working with us to give great quality shirts at an awesome price so we can raise money for Baron," Johnson says.
