(BEDFORD) - A Bedford man was arrested Tuesday after police say he threatened his neighbors.

Bedford police were called several times about 46-year-old John Cowden.

Cowden was arrested on charges of public intoxication, disorderly conduct and intimidation.

According to Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley, at 2:30 p.m. Cowden called the station to report he had been poisoned and there was a woman at his apartment who was refusing to leave.

"Mr. Coden was upset," Chief Parsley says. "He was loud and disruptive during the call. Officers responded to the apartment but there was no woman there."

When Cowden calmed down, police left, Chief Parsley says.

At 6:20 p.m., officers were called back to the apartments because residents reported Cowden was knocking on their doors. Cowden told police, he was telling the other tenants about him being poisoned. Police told Cowden to calm down, return to his apartment , stay there and they left.

But, police were called back to the apartments at 7:23 p.m.

"Complainants reported Mr. Cowden was yelling, banging on doors and making death threats to some of the neighbors," Chief Parsley added. "When officers arrived, Mr. Cowden was walking back to his apartment yelling profanities toward the other neighbors. Officers arrested him since Mr Cowden refused to cooperate and stay home."

He is being held at the Lawrence County Jail on a $5,000 surety or $505 cash bond.
