Washington Drug Task Force Arrests Salem Man, Second Arrested During Traffic Stop

(WASHINGTON CO.) - On Thursday, the Washington County Drug Task Force executed an arrest warrant at an apartment in the 1000 block of Aspen Drive in Salem.

Police arrested 25-year-old Devan Wayne Hinton Gilley.

The Task Force began a several month investigation after receiving information from the community and other law enforcement agencies regarding five overdose calls - all survived - where it was alleged that Gilley had sold heroin to the victims.

Gilley was arrested in the parking lot near his residence as he attempted to run from officers.

Gilley is being held in the Washington County Detention Center on a $25,000 cash bond on felony charges of two counts of dealing cocaine or a narcotic drug and corrupt business influence. He is also held on misdemeanor charges of resisting law enforcement and possession of a synthetic drug lookalike substance.

Assisting agencies included Salem City Police Department, Washington County Sheriff's Department, New Pekin Town Marshal, Indiana State Police and the Washington County Prosecutors Office.

On Friday, at approximately 11:26 p.m., Washington County Deputy Brad Naugle initiated a traffic stop on SR 56 East. During the traffic stop, Deputy Naugle observed drug related items in plain view, which lead to the arrest of the driver, 38-year-old Freddie Newby of Scottsburg, Indiana.

Newby was transported to the Washington County Detention Center, where he is being held on the following charges maintaining a common nuisance, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of meth and dealing in meth.

Deputy Naugle was assisted by Deputy Nathan Maudlin and Salem City Police Officer Chad Webb.
