Ugly Duck Derby Kickoff Event Tuesday At Smokin' Jim's BBQ

Last updated on Monday, March 6, 2017

(BEDFORD) - This Tuesday, from 6 to 8 p.m., the Ugly Duck Derby Kickoff Event will take place at Smokin’ Jim’s BBQ.

The Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence County will be offering something similar May 20 at its annual Ugly Duck Derby at Lowery Municipal Pool.

This year's theme is Cheeseburgers in Paradise and features Larry Summerton and Henry Hill on the grill cooking burgers.

According to board member Holly Davis, this year's fundraiser offers some new attractions. First, a Derby kickoff is set for Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at Smokin' Jim's BBQ to reveal the 10 celebrities competing in this year's Belly Buster competition. Attendees can purchase 40 racing ducks for $100. Anyone buying one of these bargain-priced double flocks also is automatically entered into a drawing for a trip to Florida over the fall break.

As for the day of the Derby, committee members have assembled a great prize list that includes a two-year lease of a 2017 Ford Focus from Bedford Ford. The last duck to cross the finish line this year claims a whole hog courtesy of Bill and Kristi Spreen.

After the kickoff event ducks are $5 each or five for $20. A flock of 13 is available for $50. There are 10,000 ducks available for the adoption. As in years past, there will be second 100 duck race with ducks adopted for $100 each. First duck of this race will win their choice of a 2017 ATV or $2,500.

New this year will be a third race of only 15 ducks. These ducks will be auctioned off at a silent auction at the Ugly Duck Derby on May 20. The grand prize of that race will be a 4 night stay at The Amazing Memory Lodge in Sevierville, Tennessee.

The club also is introducing a new team duck relay event. Local businesses can adopt teams of four larger ducks to compete in the relay.

All proceeds will benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of Lawrence County.
