Today Is National Rosie The Riveter Day At The Lawrence County Museum

(BEDFORD) - The Lawrence County Museum will host an observance of National Rosie the Riveter Day today at 3:30 p.m. at the museum, 929 15th St.

Angie Timan, who has been bringing the character of Rosie the Riveter to life for about 10 years, encourages those who come to the celebration to dress like Rosier the Riveter. Refreshments will be served.

Rosie was a popular image created to depict women who entered the workforce during in World War II to support manufacturing and industrial jobs while men were away serving as soldiers.

Timan is collecting stories of Rosies and encourages those with stories to come share them with her.

Between 1940-1945, the percentage of women in the workforce jumped from 27 percent to 37 percent.

The aviation industry saw the biggest surge, with women filling more than 300,000 jobs and comprising about 65 percent of the work force.
