(BEDFORD) - The southcentral Envirothon competition was held at the 4-H grounds in Bedford on March 7. Twenty-six teams of high school students from throughout southern Indiana competed in the contest.

The winner was North Harrison FFA. They will now go to the regional contest to compete at the state level on April 26. The winning team at the state level will represent Indiana in the national competition in Maryland.

Envirothon is a competitive learning event for high school-aged students. The contest tests the student's knowledge of environmental resources including aquatics, soils, forestry, wildlife and a current environmental issue. The regional contests also include presentations by local professionals in each of these resource areas.

The North Harrison FFA team placed first. It is coached by Darcy Kramer who serves as their FFA Advisor.

"These 5 students are highly active in FFA contests such as soils and forestry and have taken classes like natural resources and fundamentals of agriculture so they were able to apply prior knowledge to be successful in the Envirothon competition," Kramer says.

Taking second place was one of two Mitchell High school teams coached by Robyn Embry. Embry has placed in the regional contest several times and even placed in the state contest.

The third place team was from Salem coached by Seth Purlee. Salem has also gone to the State level several times in past years.
