(BLOOMINGTON) - The public is invited to join the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration Commission for an MLK Remembrance on Tuesday, April 4th from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Banneker Community Center, 930 W. 7th Street.

This will be an evening of activities, refreshments, games, arts and crafts, and readings for all ages as we remember the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the 49th anniversary of his assassination.

In remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Commissioners and community volunteers will read stories about Dr. King, other African-Americans and Civil Rights-era role models utilizing resources from the Banneker Center's Evans-Porter Memorial Library.

Mayor John Hamilton plans to join the readers, and stated, "Dr. King's assassination was a watershed moment in the history of our nation. I believe it is important to continue to promote and teach the lessons of peace, acceptance and unity he lost his life promoting. I look forward to participating in this educational celebration of Dr. King's legacy."

Participants will help construct a timeline of major events in the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights era. Families can co-create their own timelines in the context of events taking place in the 1950s, 1960s and beyond.

Students in the Indiana University Groups program will be present to lead children and their families through activities focusing on Dr. King's lesson that one person can make a difference.

Elm Street next to the Banneker Community Center, between 7th and 8th Streets, will be temporarily proclaimed Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Street by Mayor Hamilton.
