Mitchell Man Arrested After Fight

Last updated on Wednesday, March 8, 2017

(BEDFORD) - A Mitchell man was arrested after Bedford Police were called to a fight in the grassy area at 16th Street and James Avenue on Friday.

According to Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley, when officers arrived just after 10 p.m. they found two men fighting. Officers separated them and told them to calm down. One man complied but the other, 26-year-old Cory Turpin, continued to be "agitated" according to police.

"Our officers couldn't understand him because of his slurred speech," Chief Parsley added. "He was refusing to calm down and was staggering around."

Officers arrested Turpin and placed him in the backseat of a patrol car.

"He began banging his head off the windows and the cage of the car," Chief Parsley says. "He then attempted to kick out the windows of the vehicle and kicked at officers."

An ambulance was called to the scene after it appeared Turpin was suffering a seizure.

"They determined Mr. Turpin didn't have a seizure and was just acting out," Chief Parsley says.

Police did find a small baggie containing pills, which police later identified as alprazolam. Turpin did not have a prescription for the drug.

Turpin is facing charges of public intoxication, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest by force and possession of a Schedule IV controlled substance
