(BEDFORD) - Bedford North Lawrence High School officials says a lead-based solder used by art students was been removed from the building.

Officials say exposure to the solder is not believed to have posed significant risks to students.

Parents were notified of the incident via the corporation's text messaging system on Monday.

The message was sent to parents Tuesday, after the school administration learned materials and equipment used by the students in the class contained minimal levels of lead.

"As a result, students who worked with these materials and equipment may have been exposed to small amounts of lead," the message reads.

School officials immediately removed all materials and equipment believed to contain lead and replaced them with alternative materials and equipment.

The corporation then contacted the Indiana Department of Health to determine whether the solder posed any health risk to students and was informed that there was only a very slight risk because the solder only contained a minimal amount of lead and generates little dust.

The health department informed officials to remove the lead-based solder and thoroughly clean the area where students worked with the material. That cleaning process was completed.

Parents were told in the message that NLCS "stands ready and willing to provide blood tests or other appropriate medical tests at the corporation's expense for any student who is concerned about exposure to the lead-based solder."

Parents interested in having their student tested should contact Tawnya Jones at the NOCS Administration Building at (812) 279-3521 or by e-mail at jonest@nlcs.k12.in.us.
