Hoosier National Forest To Host Visit At Shirley Creek Horsecamp

Last updated on Monday, March 13, 2017

(BEDFORD) - On Saturday, April 1st, the Hoosier National Forest will host a site visit at Shirley Creek Horsecamp, located outside of Orleans.

Visitors and recreationists are invited to join Forest Service employees at 10:30 a.m. (EST) to evaluate current site amenities and deliberate potential future plans for this public land area. This is an opportunity for open discussion about Shirley Creek Horsecamp, and participants are encouraged to come with suggestions for improvements.

Shirley Creek Horsecamp is a free primitive campground with pit toilets, hitching racks, and non-potable water for livestock. The campground is designed for horse camping, however any National Forest visitor is welcome to camp.

Participants in this group visit will begin the morning by discussing the horsecamp in general, evaluating hitching racks, and discussing users concerns with some of those locations. Other amenities such as picnic tables and fire rings will also be discussed. After this thorough tour of Shirley Creek horsecamp amenities, visitors will have an opportunity to view and discuss proposed plans for the re-route and rehabilitation of Shirley Creek trail sections which are currently closed due to user safety and resource concerns. Anyone who would like to participate in this portion of the day should be prepared to hike a section of the trail; wear appropriate clothing and please bring water.

The Hoosier National Forest strives to maintain superior public land recreation opportunities and facilities. Please join us to contribute your perspective and suggestions about your public lands. RSVPs are not required, but would be appreciated so we can adequately plan for parking and any handouts. Contact Vicki Gullang-Harris at (812) 276-5987 or vgullang@fs.fed.us to RSVP or to request additional information.
