(ORLEANS) - The Dogwood Pedal is a brand new Century Ride that starts in historic downtown Orleans at the gazebo and takes cyclists through the best backroads Southern Indiana has to offer.

But to get ready for the event, officials need some help.

"We have had many of out of state registrants sign up already and this will be good for tourism in Lawrence County," says Sandra Kelly, Dogwood Pedel Co-Chair. " participants will be staying at nearby hotels and eating in restaurants here and possible bring families and be doing some entertaining and shopping."

To make participants feel welcome and to promote local businesses, organizers are looking for donations.

"Any considerable donation of supplies, water, Gatorade, snacks or giveaways will get your business name on the back of our shirt and we will advertise through out website," Kelly added. "Cash donations of $100 will also get your name on the back of the shirt and help to get our ride off to a good start."

Kelly says volunteers are also needed.

"If any business employees volunteer that will be considered a donation of time and service," she added.

Along with cash donations, officials need:

  • Bottled water
  • Bottled Gatorade
  • Packaged peanuts
  • Popcorn
  • Cliff bars
  • Granola bars
  • Tail Mix
  • Crackers
  • Bread
  • Peanut Butter
  • Jelly Bananas
  • Apples
  • Individual Potato Chip packages
  • Cookies

Orange County sights include the West Baden Dome and Pete Dye Gulf Course areas and French Lick Resort & Casino.

Included in registration is a meal for every rider and S.A.G. support. Also, a special shirt is included exclusively for Century Riders.

All other cyclists will have the option of purchasing a wick away Dogwood Pedal shirt with pre-registration. Shorter distances are available: 10 mile family route, 25, and 50 mile, but keep in mind the 25 mile and 50 mile also offer some challenges and hillwork.

This ride is being held in conjunction with the 2017 Orleans Dogwood Festival and is set for Saturday, April 22, 2017.
