Charlie Walker To Speak At Greater Mitchell Chamber Of Commerce's Dinner

(MITCHELL) - Astronaut and Bedford native Charlie Walker will be the guest speaker at the Greater Mitchell Chamber of Commerce’s annual dinner on April 6.

Charles David "Charlie" Walker is an American engineer who flew on three Space Shuttle missions in 1984 and 1985 as a Payload Specialist for the McDonnell Douglas Corporation. He is the first non-government individual to fly in space. He is a 1966 graduate of Bedford High School and in 1971 received a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from Purdue University.

Walker and his wife, Susan, now live in the Tucson, Arizona area, where they moved in 2008.

The event will begin with a social hour at 6 p.m. on April 6 in the Lakeview Room at Spring Mill Inn. The welcoming remarks and dinner begin at 6:30 p.m.

Following Walker's speech, the chamber will issue its annual community awards including those for Business, Citizen and Volunteer of the Year. Updates also are given regarding the Persimmon Festival, school system and industry in Mitchell.
