(BEDFORD) - Millions of people in the United States have Alzheimer's disease or another dementia and the number is growing.

Learn about the care of those individuals, along with other caregivers in the area and the Alzheimer's Resource Service, a service of IU Health Bloomington Community Health, at a local Caregiver University.

Caregiver University offers education on important topics for individuals providing assistance.

"When a loved one receives a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease or some other form of dementia, it is hard to know where to start," said Dayna Thompson, MS, LMHC. "These classes aim to help caregivers learn about the disease and hone their caregiving skills through a practical, compassionate approach."

The upcoming Caregiver University class for Lawrence County is:

  • Date/Time: Thursday, March 9 | 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
  • Location: Bedford Public Library (1323 K St, Bedford, IN 47421)
  • Cost/Registration: Free | Register online at bedlib.org
  • Presenter: Dayna Thompson, Alzheimer's Resource Service

Description: This workshop helps learners understand and recognize the differences in "normal" and "not normal" aging. The workshop emphasizes the value of matching helping behaviors to the person's needs and retained abilities to promote a sense of control and self-direction, and addresses typical issues that occur throughout the progression of dementia.
