(BEDFORD) - The John Wallace Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution sponsored DAR Good Citizens programs at Bedford North Lawrence and Mitchell high schools.
To become a DAR Good Citizen, candidates must exhibit dependability, service to community, leadership and patriotism. The scholarship portion consists of a written essay titled, "How do the combined actions of Good Citizens keep our country moving forward?"
Brandt Callahan, son of Jeff and Paige Callahan of Bedford, a senior at BNL and Tyler Kirk, son of Jamie and Kelly Kirk, a senior at Mitchell, were chosen as 2017 DAR Good Citizens.
Callahan is a member of Student Council, Beta Club, National Honor Society, Key Club, Student Athlete Leadership Team, Renaissance and Latin Club. He serves as president for Student Government and Champions Together. He also plays varsity baseball and was Academic All State in tennis. He works at the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence County as an assistant coach, umpire and bookkeeper.
After graduation he plans to attend Rockhurst University and pursue a double major in mathematics and business. His overall career goal is to become a sports statistician.
Callahan's peers describe him as a quiet, reserved young man, not given to attention-seeking behavior. People can count on him because he is steady, consistent and sure. He is a leader by example, effort and experience.
Kirk has served as class president, grades 9-12, served on Student Council, the Academic Team, National Honor Society, Boys State delegate, SADD, Art Club and Tri-Hi-Y. He has been a member of the football and wrestling teams for four years, serving as captain on both squads his senior year. He was a participant in the Richard Lugar Symposium for Tomorrow's Leaders and was presented a 2016 Indiana Academic All-Star Award by the Indianapolis Colts.
He works at Orange Leaf and helps his mother, who is a veterinarian, with patients on emergency calls. Because of this, he plans to pursue a career in emergency medicine by attending IUPUI.
His peers say he has a fierce work ethic, pays attention to detail and always strives for excellence. He defines his strengths as building on his weaknesses and being a true leader on the athletic field and in the classroom.
Both young men will be recognized at an awards banquet at 6 p.m. on March 28 at the Free Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 640 R St. Dinner reservations are required and can be made by contacting Martha Cox, (812) 849-2432. Tickets are $10 each and the reservation deadline is March 22.
