(BLOOMINGTON) - Soon Bloomington residents will no longer need to buy stickers for trash collection.
The Bloomington Common Council approved new changes to the city's trash collection system. Trash will soon be picked up weekly instead of bi-weekly.
The new system will give each resident using the city trash services carts for both trash and recycling. Trash carts will come in 35, 64 and 96 gallons. Recycling carts will hold 96 gallons. The carts will have radio frequency identification chips so officials can track usage, optimize routes and project revenue. Each chip will have a specific serial number and have the address of the household to which it belongs.
Prices will be a flat rate for each household depending on which size cart they chose. Those fees have yet to be set. Then in 2020 fees will be reevaluated and the sanitation department will come up with a fair payment system from data collected by the radio frequency identification chips. It will help officials come up with a pay-as-you-throw plan in the future, as opposed to the flat rates.
New sanitation trucks will pick up the trash. Currently sanitation workers have to manually place trash in the dump truck, which has resulted in injuries costing $89,000 from 2013 to 2015, according to director of Public Works Adam Wason.
