(BLOOMINGTON) - A Bloomington man was arrested Sunday on a warrant charging him with animal cruelty after he allegedly kicked a Chihuahua.

The incident happened on New Year's Day while 33-year-old Thomas Herbin, who rents a room from the family, was watching the dog and admitted he was intoxicated and had kicked the dog.

The responding officer was unable to locate Herbin at the time and requested a warrant for his arrest.

Herbin was arrested Sunday afternoon at the home and taken to the Monroe County Jail where he is being held on a $1,500 bond.

According Bloomington Police Capt. Steve Kellams, the Chihuahua, which is a family pet and a therapy dog, suffered a dislocated hip that required surgery and hospitalization at a veterinary clinic in Martinsville. The injuries resulted in more than $1,700 in medical bills.
