Last updated on Tuesday, March 14, 2017

(BLOOMFIELD) - Bloomfield and Loogootee High School seniors can apply for a scholarship in memory of 10-year-old Nickolas Decker and 10-year-old Joshua Merritt.

Both boys died in a tragic accident April 18, 2009. Joshua was a student at East Elementary School in Loogootee. Nick was a fourth-grade student at Bloomfield Elementary School.

Josh and Nick were best friends.

Wings of Hope will present the scholarship during on Honors Day, May 12 at 8:30 a.m.

Both boys suffered burns over more than 90 percent of their bodies in an accident on April 18, 2009, involving gasoline that was put on an outside smoldering fire pit in the village of Scotland.

The gasoline exploded and consumed both boys.

Both boys were taken to Riley's Children Hospital in Indianapolis. Nick passed away May 29, 2009. Nick died on June 24, 2009.

If the boys had survived they would have graduated this year.

The scholarship is available to students who plan to pursue continued education in emergency medical services, paramedic or nursing programs and will be presented to students in the middle 50 percent of the class.

The mothers say their sons were "average boys" and they want to recognize students who fall in that category.

The deadline to file for the scholarships is March 20. Applications can be found in the high school counselor's offices.
