Last updated on Friday, March 24, 2017

(BEDFORD) - A Bedford woman was flown by helicopter to an Indianapolis hospital after a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Sandpit Road and Church Camp Road on Thursday morning.

According to a Lawrence County Police report, the accident happened at 10:40 a.m.

Police stated that 78-year-old Ronald Bell of Bedford stopped his 2012 Dodge Caravan at the intersection on Church Camp Road while 86-year-old Mary Cummings of Bedford was traveling west on Sand Pit Road towards the intersection.

Police say Bell pulled into the path of Cummings' 2014 Chevrolet Equinox, striking the vehicle.

Bell told police that he didn't see Cummings' vehicle because a utility pole was blocking his view.

Bell refused medical treatment following the incident.

Cummings was taken by ambulance to St. Vincent Dunn Hospital and then flown by Stat Flight to an Indianapolis Hospital after complaining of head, chest and hip pain.

Assisting at the scene were an IU Health Hospital and AMR ambulance, Bedford Police Department officers, Bedford Fire Department extrication unit and a Stat Flight medical helicopter.
