$1.9M Contract Approved For Renovations At Bloomington Animal Shelter

Last updated on Friday, March 24, 2017

(BLOOMINGTON) - The Bloomington Redevelopment Commission approved a $1.94 million contract to begin renovations at the Bloomington Animal Shelter.

Healthier animals and better utilization of space are among the goals of planned renovations of the Bloomington Animal Shelter. The project completion date is January 31, 2018. The shelter will remain open during the renovations.

The renovation is being paid for with tax revenue from the area's tax increment financing district.

Bloomington Animal Care and Control Director Virgil Sauder told The Herald Times that officials have discussed the animal shelter project for several years. In 2011, a building analysis and study examined both current and future needs of the facility and found numerous deficiencies with the existing structure, including lighting; drainage; and heating, ventilation and air conditioning. It was determined that renovations were necessary in order to provide better care for shelter animals and create a safer environment for guests.

The shelter also provides spaces for the Monroe County Humane Association. An extra office and larger meeting room are included in the renovation plans. This would allow the association to host summer camps without interference from other activities at the shelter.

The animal shelter is seeking new volunteers, and looking to expand its foster home program to help with housing issues during construction. Anyone is interested in adoption, now's the time. To learn more, call the shelter at (812) 349-3492.
