Last updated on Wednesday, February 22, 2017

(BLOOMINGTON) - A Bloomington woman was arrested after she allegedly beat her 6-year-old daughter with a belt and then dragged her across the floor by her hair.

Bloomington Police arrested 24-year-old Shanice Williams on three felony charges of battery causing bodily injury on a child under the age of 14.

Police were called to an apartment in the 100 block of East Varsity Lane at 11:10 a.m. after Williams husband said he woke to hear screaming and crying. When he went to investigate, he found his wife striking his daughter with a belt.

When he tried to stop the beating, Shanice Williams grabbed the girl by the hair and dragged her across the floor.

"She dragged the girl through a doorway, slamming her into the door frame," Bloomington Police Capt. Steve Kellams says.

Williams also allegedly hit the child in the head with a television remote. She then began throwing the child's toys in a dumpster outside of the apartment.

Williams told police she was stressed from working hard to pay the bills and became angry with the child after she had urinated in the bathtub.

Williams did admit to hitting the girl with a belt and dragging her across the floor, but said she had a hold of the child's robe not her hair. She denied hitting her with the television remote.

Officers did find the child's broken toys in the dumpster.

Department of Child Services agents were called to the scene and Williams was transported to jail where she is being held on a $5,000 Surety or $500 cash bond. Her initial hearing scheduled for 1:30 p.m. today.
