Washington Woman Pleads Guilty To Child Abuse

(WASHINGTON) - A Washington woman pleaded guilty to child abuse in connection with a July 2015 abuse case involving her baby.

The incident was reported on July 24, 2015 when personnel at Daviess Community Hospital called the Washington Police Department and the Department of Child Services and reported that a 37-day-old infant was in the emergency room with severe injuries.

The infant was transferred to Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis, where even more injuries were discovered.

Police arrested 28-year-old Candis Freeburn and 19-year-old Matthew Palmer-Coy each on 10 counts of neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury and 10 counts of battery resulting in serious bodily injury to a person under 14 years of age.

On Friday, in Daviess Superior Court, Freeburn pleaded guilty to one count of neglect of a dependent causing serious bodily injury by leaving the child with Palmer-Coy. Under a plea agreement, nine other counts and 19 other counts against Freeburn were dropped.

Her sentencing is set for April 13th at 1 p.m. She could be sentenced to 10 years in jail. She remains in the Daviess County Security Center on a half million dollar bond.

Palmer-Coy is also being held on a half million dollar bond. He is scheduled to be in court today.
