(WASHINGTON) - Indiana State Police arrested a Washington woman after she was found driving the wrong way on I-69 Wednesday afternoon.
This is the second time since Sunday a driver has been arrested for driving the wrong direction on the interstate.
At 4:50 p.m. Wednesday, the Daviess County Sheriff's Department received numerous reports of a wrong-way driver on I-69 near the Washington exit.
Troopers Beau Brumett, Ross Johnson and Andrew Watson had been in the area conducting a saturation patrol and were approximately one mile north of the vehicle.
Brumett observed the gray 2004 Oldsmobile Alero traveling northbound in the southbound lanes and blocked the southbound lanes, causing the Oldsmobile to stop.
Troopers say the driver, 45-year-old Tracey Gross of Washington, was extremely impaired, to the extent that emergency medical personnel were called to the scene. Gross was transported to the Daviess Community Hospital, where preliminary blood tests indicated Gross was under the influence of benzodiazepines.
Gross has been charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a controlled substance, public intoxication and reckless driving.
Immediately after Gross was stopped by troopers, the southbound lanes of I-69 became backed up with nearly 50 vehicles.
On Sunday, officers in Pike County along with state police arrested Jason Jones, 43, of Washington. A search of the vehicle revealed three 100mg bottles of Methadone. Further investigation revealed Jones had consumed two bottles when he was supposed to only consume one bottle. He was charged with driving while intoxicated with a prior driving under the influence conviction, resisting law enforcement, and reckless driving.
Law enforcement, while striving to remain proactive in protecting motorists on Indiana's highways, can always use help from you. Motorists are encouraged to immediately call 911 to report any suspected reckless and dangerous drivers they encounter on the roadway to attempt to prevent potentially tragic events.
