Amber Voigtschild Named 43rd Annual Lawrence Co. Spelling Bee Champion

Last updated on Wednesday, February 8, 2017

(BEDFORD) - Amber Voigtschild, an 8th grader who is home schooled, was named the Lawrence County Champion during the 43rd Annual Lawrence County Spelling Bee at Shafer Auditorium on Tuesday night.

Amber is the daughter of Kathy and Brent Voigtschild of Bedford.

Amber received a $100 cash prize provided by Bedford Federal Savings Bank. A pizza party, provided by Pizza Hut for their homeroom class will be scheduled for a later date.. She will now advance to the 2017 Derby Festival Spelling Bee at the Kentucky Center for The Arts.

She represented Lawrence County last year in The Kentucky Derby Spelling Bee where she was a second place finisher. This is Amber's fourth year competing in the local spelling bee.

Amber's first school subject love is actually geometry. At this time Amber has many interest levels and has not narrowed down any specific college plans.

Placing second was Sarah Getman of St. Vincent de Paul and taking third was Natalie Kirkman of Oolitic Middle School.

Some of the misspelled words were "fricassee", "comeuppance" and "behemoth".

Amber took the title in Round 7 by accurately spelling the word "notorious". At that time a spell down was needed to determine who would be runner up and 3rd place finisher.

Sarah Getman and Natalie Kirkman competed for two more rounds where Sarah spelled the word "somatic" accurately and Natalie misspelled the word "auditorium".

In Round 4 - Sarah Getman was given the word "guerilla". Sarah spelled the word as "guerrilla" and was deemed incorrect by Judges Brandi Weyer and Holly Davis. Sarah issued a challenge which was a bold yet wise move.

Once the round was complete, the Judges deliberated the challenge by referencing all materials provided by The Kentucky Derby Festival and found the word spelled both ways in the provided documents. At this time it was determined that Sarah Getman would continue to the next round of the spelling bee.

Should Amber Voigtschild not be able to represent Lawrence County at the Kentucky Derby Spelling Bee then Sarah Getman will have the honor.
