(BLOOMINGTON) - Malik Parker told police he didn’t think the .22-caliber rifle was loaded when he pointed it at 18-year-old Anthony Andrews and pulled the trigger.
The bullet struck Andrews in the neck.
Bloomington Police were called to the home in the 2500 block of South Camden Drive at 3:41 p.m. after a 17-year-old boy dialed 911 to report a person had been shot.
Police arrested 21-year-old Parker on a charge of reckless homicide. He is being held in the Monroe County Jail on a $10,000 surety or $500 cash bond.
His initial hearing is scheduled for today at 1:30 p.m.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Parker told police there was no arguing of any kind while they were in the room.
He admitted to pointing the rifle in the direction of Anthony and then pulled the trigger.
"He said he was kind of in shock because he didn't think the gun was loaded," wrote Bloomington Police Detective Jacob Hunter.
According to police, the two had been sitting on a bed with another friend, smoking "shatter," a form of hash oil with a potent THC content, before the fatal shooting.
Parker told police that he noticed the rifle missing its stock and loaded with a magazine containing bullets, lying on the bed where he and Andrews had been smoking.
Parker told police he didn't know why he picked up the gun, pointed it at Andrews and pulled the trigger.
Andrews got up from the bed and walked to an adjacent bathroom, where he collapsed on the floor.
A 17-year-old, who was present during the incident, called 911 and attempted to hold a towel to the Bloomington High School South senior's neck to stop the bleeding. He told police he didn't see the shooting because he had his back turned.
The 17-year-old was released to his parents and has not been charged in the incident
