(BEDFORD) - Rex Knight of Southern Indiana Development Commission held a public meeting before the Lawrence County Commissioners meeting Tuesday morning to again seek a grant to demolish the old Huron School.

The old Huron School has become an eyesore for that community.

The county was turned down for the grant last fall due to lack of funding.

The $230,000 grant, funded by the Office of Community Rural Affairs, would be used to demolish the building and restore the property to a green space. The county will have a 10 percent match. Engineers estimate the cost of the project at $273,000.

In other business:

The commissioners approved a contract to allow David Shircliff of the county's public defense agency to apply for a JAG grant of $60,245 via Recovery Works.

The grant, which was funded by a different source in 2016, pays for a social worker to assist the local agency on cases involving mental illness and other specialized circumstances.

The Lawrence County Highway Department was awarded a safety grant of $4,422.40 from IPEP.

Highway Superintendent David Holmes reported crews are replacing culverts to get ready for spring paving, cutting brush and using cold mix to patch potholes.

Holmes hopes to repair or replace the deck on Bridge 135 on Sandpit Road this year.

"There are several holes and the bridge deck is deteriorating," Holmes added. "We are looking at our options."

Holmes estimates the cost to replace the bridge deck at $400,000.

Maj. Gregg Taylor reported there were 114 inmates in the county jail. Of those 11 were females and 10 were Level 6 felons and 2 Department of Correction holds.
